    Keynote Session: Brief Overview on Breast Cancer and Surgical Management and How a Breast Nurse Navigator Helps Ease the Journey

    In this session, Dr. Blumencranz will review the history of breast cancer treatment, review surgical options in treatment including oncoplastic resection and reconstructive surgery, discuss the use of sentinel node biopsy, and provide highlights on systemic management, radiation therapy, and the use of genomics.

    We will also hear from a Breast Nurse Navigator to gain an understanding of the patient journey and communication involved in ensuring the best outcome for the patient.  With the goal of the best patient outcome, hear suggestions on how mastectomy fitters can best work together with nurse navigators and provide resources for patients.  

    Learning Objectives: 

    • Understand the indications for breast conservation versus mastectomy.
    • Learn about the management of the axilla to reduce the risk of lymphedema.
    • Understand the importance of multidisciplinary treatment planning involving surgery radiation therapy and medical therapy.
    • Understand the contribution of the nurse navigator role in patient care and how mastectomy fitters can take this information to their own local communities to strengthen their relationship with their nurse navigators.

    About Peter W. Blumencranz, MD, FACS and Agnes Jastrzebski, RN

    Dr. Peter W. Blumencranz has been a board-certified surgeon for over 40 years. He is actively involved in research trials and new technologies in the treatment of breast cancer. Dr. Blumencranz has lectured across the United States and abroad, served on numerous expert panels, presented at major oncology conferences, and published articles and book chapters in peer-reviewed journals. He is a veteran of the United States Navy, diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Southeastern Surgical Congress, and the Society of Surgical Oncology. 

    Agnes Jastrzebski is a certified Breast Nurse Navigator with BayCare Morton Plant Hospital. She specializes in providing free individualized guidance to anyone who has been diagnosed or treated for breast cancer at Morton Plant Hospital.  Her duties also include breast conference coordination and serving as a member of the Breast Program Leadership Committee. Agnes was born and raised in Poland and her parents moved to America to have better opportunities for their children. For Agnes, a better opportunity meant to become a nurse. She received her RN nursing degree in 1995 in New Jersey. She worked in hospitals, nursing homes, and in business settings. Agnes has almost 30 years of professional experience in both nursing and business. She moved to Florida and 2009 and has worked as a Research Nurse Coordinator & Data Manager for TCC research Department at Morton Plant for 3.5 years. She then transitioned to nurse navigator role and has been in this position for over 9.5 yrs. Agnes is known as a loyal team player with a commitment to provide quality care. With an enthusiastic and genuinely friendly attitude, Agnes has a sincere passion in all that she does.
